Kyrgyzstan gold mine needs to manage multiple data streams and interrogate data accurately

At more than 12,000 ft. above sea level, a Kyrgyzstan gold mine is the second-highest gold mining operation in the world. It is an open-pit site located near the border with China in the Tian Shan Mountains.

The beginning

The mine started operation in 1997 and is the biggest single project in the country, and its output accounts for more than 1/3 of national export of goods and services. Kumtor’s share in KR GDP in 2013 was 7.7%1 Responsible environmental management is an important issue for the company, the community and the government – and so to meet its obligations, an intensive environmental monitoring programme has been in place for many years at the mine and its surroundings. This has resulted in a lot of data from multiple sources, such as field, laboratory, data loggers and consultants’ reports.

Given Centerra's commitment to good international industry practice and the high degree of scrutiny of the operation by various stakeholders, environmental data management is considered a key issue. EHS Data has an international reputation for providing quality environmental data management systems to the mining industry, and so in September 2013, Kumtor management approached EHS Data to assist in implementing a comprehensive and integrated Environmental Data Management system at their site.

System Requirements

Flexibility: The system needed to manage multiple data streams, including data from water, sewage and effluent treatment plants, tailings management facility, groundwater and surface water monitoring, air quality, acid rock drainage analysis, waste generation and other data collected for annual environmental and sustainability reports.

Reporting: It was important to Kumtor to be able to analyse and interrogate data quickly and accurately, and report on compliance against environmental standards. In addition, reports needed to be both in English and Russian (Cyrillic alphabet).

Automation: To minimise the risk of human error and ensure quality control of data, Kumtor wanted to automate the data collection process as much as possible. This included capturing field data using PDA compatible templates and automatic import for on-site weather station data, various data loggers and external laboratory reports.

Our Approach

After reviewing the requirements and the options available, EHS Data’s MonitorPro Enterprise suite was selected. This contains comprehensive desktop, easy to use and multi-lingual browser interface, PDA field collection applications, and a multitude of central automation engines.
