Canadian Diamond mine uses MonitorPro to help achieve its goal to leave no trace on the environment
Located just 220km south of the Arctic Circle, Diavik Diamond Mine is located in a harsh but pristine environment. The site aims to leave no trace on the environment come the end of operations; environmental management and monitoring is therefore of key importance at this site
The Diavik Diamond Mine first started operations in 2003 and is located on a 20 square kilometre island informally called East Island, in Lac de Gras at the end of the Ice Road. The lake is 60 kilometres long and located approximately 300 kilometres by air northeast of Yellowknife, the capital of Canada’s Northwest Territories.
Diavik operated an off the shelf monitoring software programme that failed to fully capture relevant data and lacked the required functionality for a large mining company.
A review was undertaken to identify a system they could adopt to replace the current system. Diavik were looking for a system which could contain this ever-increasing volume of data and offer additional benefits of flexibility and ease of use.
MonitorPro was selected due to its comprehensive suite of features. Prior to full installation and training on site a data transfer task was undertaken which involved the import of historic data into MonitorPro - Desktop from their legacy system. Diavik have a 10 user premium system and since installation, the system has been in constant use both acquiring data and in data presentation.
Rio Tinto has consolidated all of the data within one central system and use the increased functionality of the Monitoring Scheduler to manage monitoring requirements.
MonitorPro Field allows for the entry of quality checked readings directly to MonitorPro. In addition to automated alerts, staff benefit from easy access to trend and interpret data and also use bespoke reporting templates to significantly streamline their monthly Surveillance Network Program reporting process.
Internal reporting requirements have also been reduced by the use of the MP-Web Dashboard, which allows management to view up-to-the-minute data at any time.
