Intro

Leading Pacific Mining Corporation PanAust use MonitorPro to record and report all environmental monitoring data, thus streamlining their environmental monitoring tasks.
PanAust is a copper and gold producer in Laos, with operations all over the Pacific region. Mining and exploration are their core business activities. In 2012 PanAust accounted for more than seven per cent of the nation’s gross domestic product and over thirty per cent of its total goods export.

Overview

The company has many operational sites, and also numerous exploration areas to report on. This data was managed by a combination of manual form input and a number of large Excel workbooks. Like most manual systems, this was time consuming to maintain and made it difficult to check the integrity of historical data. After a competitive tendering process, EHS Data’s MonitorPro emerged as the best Environmental Data Monitoring System.

The Data Management Solution

Phu Bia Mining purchased 18 licences of MonitorPro. A single database holds all Environmental Monitoring Data for their Laos operations and projects at their head office in Vientiane. Management and technical staff can use the software from the office or anywhere in the field, even if it is in a remote location.
Alex McBurnie, Senior Implementation Consultant, EHS Data, says, “There were various challenges to this project but EHS Data solved them by working closely with the site teams and senior management to ensure that monitoring data and compliance limits are accurately reflected in MonitorPro and ensuring that automated reporting shares performance with many stakeholders with no administrative burden on personnel”
The most important early task was to migrate existing data to the new system. That was completed in late 2013. Liaison between EHS Data and the client was vital and an EHS Data consultant went to Laos to train 14 staff and to produce recommendations for improvements to maximise the benefits of the new system. A second visit in March 2014 reviewed progress, implemented advanced training and improved automation.
Two key items implemented were liaison with global-leading analysis firm ALS laboratories to ensure data was imported automatically from emails, and the production of report templates for normal regulatory purposes.

Improved Efficiency and Monitoring for all Phu Bia Mining’s Projects

Phu Bia Mining are now utilising MonitorPro to manage Environmental Monitoring Data across all their operations and projects in Laos. This has improved efficiency and provides ensures confidence in the integrity of the data. EHS Data continues to work in close partnership with the client to further maximise these benefits.
Alex McBurnie says, “Phu Bia Mining can now be confident that their environmental data is accurate, easily-accessed, and complete, which means that their environmental targets are being reached, and can be seen to be fulfilled by the regulatory authorities.”
The company also benefits by having a far less time-consuming data-management process, which means that staff are less involved in bureaucracy, and are more productive.
