Environmental Manager

The Overview

The organisation have permit obligations to manage the environmental impacts of all their operations during exploration, construction, operation and post-closure. This brings with it an intensive monitoring and reporting programme with many targets set by the regulators. Sustainability Performance is measured using indicators from the Global Reporting Initiative

(GRI) and Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM), an initiative of the Mining Association of Canada (MAC), along with several other performance indicators developed by the metals corporation. This clearly suggests that a fully automated requirement to manage large amounts of data was essential.

The Implementation

In 2009 the business purchased MonitorPro initially for the management of data associated with the closed mine sites in both Canada and USA. Prior to using MonitorPro, the operations personnel were using a large number of spreadsheets and Access databases to manage all the environment information. The process was complex and extremely labour intensive.

Prior to the MonitorPro implementation, the system was pre-populated with historical data and the system was successfully installed on site in early 2010 and is now fully operational. The data currently manages a whole host of post-closure data including surface and groundwater, fish and sediment from local watercourses, sludge and liquid effluent with data including chemical composition, physical characteristics and toxicity. MonitorPro offers the ability to manage a whole host of data, and automate the processes of data import and validation. Data can then be scrutinised in a variety of ways in the system and reporting has been automated in both French and English languages.

Business Benefits

3. MCerts Certified
