MonitorPro: Helping Conuma Resources Ensure Environmental Compliance

MonitorPro logo

Conuma Resources Limited (Conuma) is a steelmaking coal mine based in BC, Canada. Sustainability is a key focus at Conuma, and as a result, the company is committed to minimising its environmental impact. Part of this commitment requires the collection, analysis, and reporting of extensive environmental data at multiple locations, including both operational mine sites and closed sites in care and maintenance. In addition to maintaining its own sustainability goals, Conuma is required to submit reports to the British Columbia Ministry of Environment and Parks (BC MoE) to ensure compliance with its environmental operating regulations.

To effectively manage this amount of data and simplify onward reporting to authorities, a dedicated Environmental Data Management System (EDMS) was required.

Simplified Environmental Data management with MonitorPro

MonitorPro provided several key features and benefits which were perfectly suited to Conuma’s requirements.  These included:

  • Suitable for multi-site operations
  • Compliance
  • Action Plans
  • Monitoring Schedules
  • In field data collection – MP-Field
  • Obligations
  • Integration
  • Reporting

Suitable for Multi-Site Operations

Conuma has 5 sites, including both operational mines and those in the care and maintenance phase. MonitorPro is easily scalable, meaning a multi-site implementation was not a problem.

Having MonitorPro allows data to be collected and managed by each site’s environmental team, with help and support from a dedicated corporate team that ensures that standards, workflows, and best practices are applied across the system. All data is stored on a secure, centralised platform, allowing data from all sites to be accessed in a consistent, uniform manner.

Compliance

As part of their environmental compliance obligations, Conuma must compare monitoring results against stringent BC water quality guidelines, many of which involve complex, calculation-based criteria. MonitorPro can automatically perform these calculations and generate the applicable guideline limits, eliminating the need to calculate them manually in spreadsheets.

Other permit-based compliance requirements which need to be met include Trigger Action Response Plans (TARP). These require sites to monitor and check against set trigger levels and compliance limits, with plans of action in place if a breach occurs, with different actions depending on the severity of the breach.

Action Plans

TARP structured Action Plans were created in Conuma’s MonitorPro databases. Upon data entry, if a trigger level or compliance limit is breached, Conuma activates the corresponding level of the Action Plan to determine the appropriate response actions.

MonitorPro then lists the resulting Action Plan steps, enabling teams to assign actions to relevant users and to track response progress and action close out.

Monitoring Schedules

As part of each site’s Permit and TARPs, all monitoring is planned, tracked and checked using the Monitoring Scheduler in MonitorPro.  Monitoring Schedules were created for each Conuma site, identifying both lab and field data that requires collection. For each Schedule, the system automatically generates a Monitoring Visit at the set frequency. When data arrives in the database, it is linked to the Visit, and the percentage completed is updated. Users can track progress against each visit, and if data has been missed or still requires collection, an email alert is sent by MonitorPro to set site contacts.

MP-Field

Conuma uses MonitorPro’s MP-Field to simplify and improve field data collection. They have a large MP-Field user base across their sites, including external contractors.

Using MP-Field simplifies data collection by highlighting to the user both when and where monitoring is required, and what sampling and analysis should be completed. This is made even easier with MP-Field’s built-in navigation feature. MP-Field also reduces the potential for data-entry errors by providing in-field validation and allowing technicians to capture data directly, without having to transcribe from notebooks or other devices (Check out this article on the advantages of electronic field data collection for more information)

Obligations

To quickly see a site’s performance against its Permit or TARP, Conuma utilises MonitorPro’s Obligations feature. Each Obligation is constructed to track the site’s Permit or TARP monitoring requirements and allows the users to assess compliance against compliance limits and monitoring frequency. This is clearly displayed on each site-specific dashboard, which is dynamically updated as data comes into the system. These dashboards are then shared with the relevant users.

Obligations

Integration

Integration options within MonitorPro provided the solution to several requirements for Conuma, including the creation of an API connection to Power BI so Conuma could complete external reports and build annual report tables, while the MonitorPro Email Importer allows Conuma to automatically import field and lab data from emails received from contractors or the laboratory following collection in the field.

Reporting

Conuma needed a system that could quickly generate reports that could be easily shared across users and sites. The Dashboards in MonitorPro allow a report to be easily generated with up-to-date data, including tables, figures, graphs, and photos, and quickly shared with other users and groups within the system.

In addition to standard regulatory reporting requirements, Conuma must upload data to the BC MoE via its online portal, EnMoDS. MonitorPro has an EnMoDS-specific export that allows users to submit their data easily.

MonitorPro: The Perfect Solution for Environmental Data Management

Prior to implementing MonitorPro, Conuma was managing its data using numerous Excel sheets and other disparate tools. The implementation of MonitorPro enabled Conuma to simplify their environmental data management, streamlining their processes for collecting, analysing and reporting data.

This saves them a considerable amount of time and resources, improves productivity, reduces the risk of data errors, enhances their environmental compliance outlook, and advances their sustainability goals.
